Non-Children's Poetry by Sergey Mikhalkov: From Strict Formality to Sensible Rigorism

Abstract

Sergei Mikhalkov's lyrics are traditionally viewed from the standpoint of the manifestation of nominative children's themes, the problems of a child growing up, and the latter's comprehension of various facets of life. However, this is not entirely true, because the work of S.V. Mikhalkov also includes a more complex thematic facet – the theme of war. In 2023, the collection “War Poems” was published, which contains texts written during the Great Patriotic War, when S.V. Mikhalkov was a war writer-correspondent for the newspaper “For the Glory of the Motherland”, the publication “Stalinsky Falcon” and other periodicals. For the poet, the main task was probably to raise the spirit of soldiers, concretize military events, describe exploits, and condemn cowardice and betrayal. Sergei Mikhalkov boldly, and most importantly, openly examines the truth of life, focused on the years 1941–1945. The relevance of the poems in the collection for today is extremely high. The modern reader can learn a lot from the aptly spoken phrases of Sergei Mikhalkov, see effectively and experience such a terrible experience in Russia, and the whole world. The research methodology is focused on hermeneutic principles and options for receptive reading of texts. It seems that “War Poems” by Sergei Mikhalkov is not only a superficial drawing of attention to one’s own figure, but an appeal to soldiers, officers, home front workers, captured, mothers, wives, and children of soldiers. A special place in the collection is occupied by the image of the people who survived such a terrible and merciless situation. The author believes that victory will be achieved at any cost, so as not to interfere with the soldiers. The realities of the poems raised the spirit of the defenders of the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War; the texts effectively influence the modern reader, regardless of age. Sergei Mikhalkov's military lyrics are simple, accessible, sometimes free from serious semantic content, but they are sincere, sensual, and natural. Thus, this article makes an attempt to touch upon a little-studied layer of Sergei Mikhalkov’s legacy, as well as to understand the specifics of the poet’s understanding of a difficult situation – war, and specifically turn to the analysis of lyrical forms. It is advisable to use the material as part of the study of courses on the history of Russian literature of the twentieth century, the work of Sergei Mikhalkov.

Integration of Music and Literature in the Education System: Inter-Subject Relations

Abstract

In the modern system of secondary general education, there is a demand for improving interdisciplinary connections between cultural spheres in the learning process, and this need is especially noticeable in the study of literature – a subject in which it is difficult to separate educational material from the historical and cultural context. In the current realities, modern teachers are extremely interested in the issue of additional forms of education. One of them is musical audio recordings – placed in the public domain, they are easy to find and use in the classroom, which makes the learning process more rich and interesting. Even if the found material does not sufficiently correspond to the goals set by the school curriculum, there is always the possibility of adapting it through the use of modern technologies. This article aims to theoretically substantiate the principle of interdisciplinary interactions between music and literature within the educational process. The tasks include: analysis of the connections existing between literature and music; suggesting ways to use music while studying literature at school. At the same time, the authors of the article proceed from the fact that music (musical accompaniment to works of literature) is another special form of artistic text (along with literary reading, pictorial illustrations for works, stage and cinematic interpretations of literary works). With each new form, a new interpretation of any work arises. New content appears, so a work of art cannot be judged only by its special forms (reading a work cannot be replaced, for example, by listening to its musical interpretation).

«One of the Opinions About Nekrasov's Poetry»: S.F. Platonov's Review

Abstract

The biography and scientific work of the outstanding Russian historian S.F. Platonov continues to arouse the natural interest of modern researchers. But the years of his youth, the period when there was a process of folding ideological attitudes, professional preferences, youthful hobbies remain little developed. At the same time, the time, starting from the age of 13 and before entering the university, as it turns out, is filled with numerous poetic, prose, dramatic, even scientific experiments. They allow us to talk about great literary inclinations that found expression in specific works, some of them received high marks, but remain unknown. A critical review of an article dedicated to the work of N.A. Nekrasov is published, which traces the emerging mastery of writing such studies, the attitude of progressive youth to the work of the great poet of Russia. The appearance of the manuscript was the result of the acquaintance of the young reviewer with the published collection, where responses to the poet's death were collected, mainly published in provincial periodicals. This circumstance indicates the fact of S. Platonov's interest in the novelties of critical publications. He boldly, with patriotic fervor, defended the outstanding poet-democrat. He was deeply touched by the one-sided, and therefore unfair assessment of his work. Not always with the necessary skill, but argumentatively, the reviewer, drawing on his, as it seemed to him, irrefutable facts, rejects the unreasonable, as it seemed to him, assessment of the anonymous author. Already in this his fear of the reading public was manifested. It can be stated that the review, as the first experience of such creativity, turned out to be successful and well deserves the attention of specialists.

Brief Review of Quotations of Linguists’ Opinions About Connective Compounds Constructions of the Russian Language

Abstract

A brief review of the linguistic literature on the problem of attachment and parceling in the form of direct quotations, extracted from the publications of the authors who deal with this problem, is presented in the article for the first time. A review of the papers has shown that the connection, expressed by connecting compound constructions that are outside the main sentence, after a dot, is interpreted by scientists ambiguously. The status of connection structures is interpreted in three ways. The main reason is the views of scientists on the nature of attachment and parcellation. The first point of view is typical for the majority of researchers who consider connecting compound constructions to be parceled. They are widely represented in the language of fiction, the media, advertising, less often in the language of journalism. The second point of view is expressed by scientists who see transitivity (syncretism, asymmetry) in the connecting compound constructions. The reason is the discrepancy between form and content, as opposed to traditional. The third point of view belongs to linguists who recognize connecting compound constructions as connecting elements independent of parceling, located outside the main sentence, after the dot. The presented three points of view indicate that the problem of distinguishing between accession and parceling is still relevant. Therefore, research on these and similar issues will continue for a long time. This is evidenced by the transformation of the views of authoritative scientists regarding their linguistic status, and the emergence of new interesting works on these constructions in Russian and other languages. I hope that a short review of quotations will allow the reader to save the time needed to search for the relevant scientific literature, and to quickly navigate the problem of connecting compound constructions.

The Mythological Picture of the World of the Slavs in N.V. Gogol's Novella «Viy»

Abstract

Over the past thirty years, one of the priorities in modern Gogol studies has been the study of Gogol's artistic anthropology in its mythological and symbolic characteristics of the Proto-Slavic and Old Slavic worldview. In this regard, the authors of the article set themselves a number of tasks: to characterize the fabulous mythological fiction, to analyze the fabulous mythological fiction of «Mirgorod» and the story «Viy», to justify the translation of the mythological picture of the world of the Slavs through the prism of the writer's creativity. Mythology, in the view of the researchers of this work, appears as a specific way, a method of reproducing reality. The mythological picture of the world has always accompanied man, because behind it there are certain ideas about the world and man's place in this world. Having arisen in the pre-artistic period of the development of literature, it is associated with the imagination, which often uses fantastic assumptions when modeling an image or idea. Thus, the perception of the world through the prism of myth gave rise to a special mythological fiction, whose imagery was embodied in concrete sensory forms. The myth, as a part of oral folk art, does not fully outlast itself over time and continues to influence domestic fiction. This is especially evident in the era of Romanticism, with its ideas about the ambiguity of the world, appeal to the dark sides of the soul, fantastic imagery. For romantics, fiction is a specific form of artistic cognition of the world and man. Gogol, as a bright representative of this era, however, captured in his works not a global myth, but a Slavic one. The story «Viy» occupies a special place in the cycle «Mirgorod». It contains fantasy of a fairy-tale and religious-mythological plan, which is explained by the connections with the genre of the epic and the Slavic myth about the dark spirit, the sender of nightmares and dark visions, as well as Christian ideas about the world-bearer.

Program “Country of Aipin” (Out-of-Class Reading Lessons, Grades 5–7)

Abstract

In his work, a literature teacher should always place special emphasis not only on the acquisition by children and adolescents of a certain amount of knowledge, but also on the development of the child’s cognitive and creative abilities as an individual, and the formation of a sense of patriotism. When a teacher introduces a child to the wonderful world of literature from the Little Motherland, he is able to teach him to make decisions and perform moral actions, i.e. master the key competencies that modern quality education requires. At all times, an important component in training and education is the formation of a patriotic feeling and respect for national culture. It is in this context that the “Country of Aipin” Program was compiled (extra-curricular reading lessons, grades 5–7), which is based on such a form of work as literary local history. The “Country of Aipin” program (extra-curricular reading lessons, grades 5–7), aimed at supporting and promoting reading, will help children immerse themselves in the literary world of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Yugra, perceive a book written by a local author as a source of spiritual ideals that shape the moral worldview of a growing child generation of Ugra. The curriculum for extracurricular reading was compiled for teachers of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Yugra to conduct extracurricular reading lessons in grades 5–7 of a secondary school. The purpose of these lessons is to develop a taste for serious reading, create conditions for the formation of independent reading activity of schoolchildren in grades 5–7, introduce students to modern Ugra literature, form a general culture and erudition that contributes to the development of verbal logical thinking, cognitive activity, memory and speech. This program is built at the level of interdisciplinary connections. Recommended for teachers of literature and humanities subjects in secondary schools.

Interpretation of a Literary Text in the Cinema: V.S. Rozov's Play “Forever Alive” and M.K. Kalatozov's Film “Cranes Are Flying”

Abstract

The article explores film screening as a special form of literary text. Within the framework of the study, the concept of cinema screening, its classification and features of types, “strengths” and “weaknesses” of this format are considered. The problems arising during the transfer of literary works of art to the cinema screen are also characterized, which are the subject of controversy at the present time. The study of these issues is carried out not only in theory, but also in practice, which is presented in the form of a comparison of V.S. Rozov's play "Forever Alive" (1943) and the movie M. K. Kalatozova “Cranes are Flying” (1957). In addition to identifying the differences between the original literary work and its transfer to the language of cinema, expressed in deviation from following the literary fiction text, added episodes and expansion and reduction of individual storylines of the original, the creative task is determined, and how exactly it was achieved. The main research methods: analysis of scientific literature on the subject of the study, used for a detailed examination of film screening as a special form of literary text, analysis of critical studies, biographical literature, archival documents, as well as comparative analysis (they were used when comparing the original literary text (V.S. Rozov's play “Forever Alive”) and its film adaptations (M.K. Kalatozov's film “Cranes are Flying”)). As a result of the conducted comparative analysis, a conclusion is drawn that contains answers to the questions: which type of film adaptations does this film belong to, what is it expressed in, and also the reasons that led to this result are revealed.

National-Cultural Specificity of Biblical Idioms

Abstract

The article investigates the representation features of idioms of biblical origin on the material of various languages. Idioms of biblical origin are regarded as linguocultural and nationally specific units, reflecting the peculiarities of mentality and religious worldview of a particular linguistic culture. The article reveals a number of extralinguistic factors that determine both the universal and specific features of idioms of biblical origin representation in various languages. The factors contributing to the universality of idioms of biblical origin include: 1) the commonality of Christian culture; 2) the influence of the Greek and Latin languages on subsequent translations of the Bible used nowadays. The followings are singled out as extralinguistic factors that determine the specificity of idioms of biblical origin in various languages: 1) the emergence time and dissemination scope of biblical translations; 2) confessional affiliation of a certain ethnic group; 3) peculiarities of national perception of the world and cultural values of a particular linguistic culture; 4) the socio-political system of a particular era or country; 5) mass-media factors. The national-cultural specificity of idioms of biblical origin is manifested in their non-equivalence in a particular language, the quantitative divergence of idioms of biblical origin included into a particular language from a single source, differences in the semantic capacity and meaning of idioms of biblical origin used in each of the languages, the emphasis on certain images and cognitive features activated in idioms of biblical origin, in existance of a set of borrowed idioms of biblical origin from different languages. It should be noted that even universal idioms of biblical origin functioning in different languages can be nationally specific due to the differences in the activated semantic features and figurative components of idioms.

Literary Associations in Rhyme Slang: Charles Dickens and His Characters in Rhyme Slang

Abstract

The article aims at describing the literary associations of rhyming slang associated with the name of Charles Dickens, a classic of world literature, whose works were included in the treasury of both English and world literature and who became the most popular English-language writer during his lifetime, to reveal how the work of the eminent writer and unforgettable colorful characters, many of whom have become recognized types in English fiction, are represented in rhyming slang. The topic is examined using rhyming slang samples of containing the names of characters and titles of Charles Dickens's works, selected by a continuous sampling method from authoritative dictionaries of general and rhyming slang. Expressions of rhyming slang that refer to some important work of a writer or are based on the names of some significant characters are cultural items that are reflected in the collective memory of the British and are thus included in the so-called “current background knowledge” and “background knowledge of cultural heritage”. The rhymes contain precedent onyms and reflect the tendency to create new onomastic rhymes built on the names of famous and popular personalities from the world of cinema, pop music, show business, sports, politics, etc. Literary associations have not yet been the subject of special analysis and undoubtedly deserve linguistic and sociocultural description. The author's attention was drawn to the little-studied area, the analysis of which sets a new vector for the study of rhyming slang, which deals with cultural and historical items that are of certain value from the point of view of culture-oriented linguistics, cross-cultural communication and the general study of culture. The results of the study may be of use and interest to specialists developing topics in intercultural communication, linguocultural studies, contrastive linguistics of the English and Russian languages, foreign (English) literature, speech culture and in the practice of teaching English.

Exploring Authenticity and Meaning in Art: an Analysis of Expressive Means and Stylistic Devices in “Headlong”, Novel by Michael Frayn

Abstract

The subject of research is the novel “Headlong” by Michael Fraine, published in 1999. The purpose of the study is to study the concepts of authenticity and meaning in art, presented by the author through an analysis of expressive means and stylistic techniques in this novel. The methods used to obtain results include a formal method, a hermeneutic method, psychological and existential methods, and an applied method, since the study was conducted during the teaching of an extensive reading course for students of the 4th year of the Foreign language: two foreign languages specialty. Michael Fraine's “Headlong” offers a thought-provoking exploration of authenticity and meaning not only in art, but also in real life of both the fiction character and the reader. Through the protagonist's quest for a lost painting, the novel challenges conventional notions of authenticity, emphasizing the subjective nature of perception and interpretation. Frayn underscores the role of context in shaping the meaning of art and highlights the complex interplay between art and society. Ultimately, “Headlong” invites readers to reflect on the intricate relationship between authenticity, meaning, and the ever-evolving nature of art. This essay explores how Frayn's skillful use of language, narrative structure, and character development enhances the exploration of authenticity and meaning in art, shedding light on the complex interplay between perception, interpretation, and the subjective nature of artistic value. The obtained results are of applied character, since they can be used for inclusion in educational syllabi in the English language and Literature of Great Britain, or used to illustrate events in art circles or courses and/or to organize extracurricular events, such as debates about the role of art or about the boundaries between reality and perception.

Ecolinguistics, Ecotranslatology, Ecology of Translation: Correlation of Concepts in the Light of Modern Discourse Practice

Abstract

In today's world, there is a notable shift not only towards the "ecologization" of human consciousness but also within various domains of scientific knowledge, including translation theory and linguistics. Translation studies that incorporate the prefix "eco" necessitate a systematic classification and the establishment of semantic connections among terms. This article seeks to delve into the emergence of an ecological approach to translation within the contexts of both Russian and Chinese translation studies, aiming to elucidate the interrelationships between key concepts that characterize modern trends in translation research across diverse academic traditions. The primary objective of this article is to establish a symbiotic relationship between ecotranslatology, which originated in China, and the ecology of translation, a discipline that has emerged in Russia. Ecotranslatology, as an independent subfield within translation studies, is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture and currently stands as a thriving area of inquiry in the People's Republic of China. In contrast, the ecology of translation is actively advancing under the purview of Russian linguists, who emphasize that high-quality, harmonious translation encompasses not only cultural congruence but also ecological alignment. This ecological perspective is posited to underpin the development of a translation ecosystem within the broader global ecosystem. Methodologically, this study draws from several dimensions: firstly, it brings together the ideas of international linguists specializing in linguistic ecology and ecolinguistics; secondly, it explores research on cognitive modeling of the translation process in an ecosystem that unites the translator with the socio-natural environment of his habitat. Finally, the study includes the perspective of Chinese scholars based on the classical theory of adaptation and choice in translation. Ultimately, this study highlights the importance of environmental science in understanding the cognitive mechanisms inherent in the translation process.

The Role of the Symbol in the Work of the Bronte Sisters (Based On the Novels «Jane Eyre» and «Wuthering Heights»)

Abstract

The article focuses on the analysis of symbolism reflected in two striking works of the Victorian era: Emily Bronte's «Wuthering Heights» and Charlotte Bronte's «Jane Eyre». The work compares the symbols used by the specified authors (etymology of names and surnames, the image of nature, plots and images appearing in fairy-tale and mythological plots), search for images common to them. The relevance of the study is due to the increased interest of philologists in the work of the Bronte sisters, the desire of researchers to highlight the features that unite the works of both Charlotte and Emily Bronte. To achieve this goal, a comparative historical research method is used. The result of the study is a conclusion about the general fabulous and mythological sources in the symbolism of the fiction of the Brontë sisters, which characterize the individuality of each author, the specifics of each of the two analyzed works, but also allow determining their common origins. Both Bronte sisters, when creating their novels, somehow turned to various fairy-tale plots, mythological images appearing in Celtic legends and legends. The originality of the data obtained lies in the motivic organization and comparative analysis of the texts of the two sisters. The practical significance of the work consists in the possibility of using the research results in the formation of programs on the “History of foreign literature of the XIX century”, as well as in special courses on the work of the Bronte sisters. In addition, the results of the study will serve as a guideline for scientific research. The further direction of research involves the continuation of the study of the Bronte sisters' creativity, the reflection of the fairy-tale and mythological context in it from the point of view of comparative analysis.

Images of Detective Heroes in F. Scheunemann’s Novel “The Mystery of the Running Safe”

Abstract

The article analyzes the images of detective heroes presented in the novel by F. Scheunemann “The Mystery of the Runaway Safe.” By using the method of holistic analysis of a work of fiction, it was established that these characters in the novel are divided into two groups: amateur detectives and professional detectives. The first category is represented by the images of teenagers Kira, Tom and Paulie, the British breed cat Winston Churchill and the yard cats Odette, Chups, Spike and Francesco, the second – by the image of a criminal police officer Bange. The main means of representing these characters are speech characteristics and expressive artistic details. By initiating their own investigation into the mysterious thefts of safes from Hamburg schools, cat heroes and teenagers get an additional opportunity to demonstrate their best qualities, such as responsibility, diligence, seriousness, and thoroughness. As a result, this detective “union” of teenagers and cats contributes to the successful solving of a crime. Such an “intersection” of two storylines not only increases the level of reader interest in this work, but also reminds young readers of the importance of friendship, mutual assistance, and the need for a careful and caring attitude towards animals. The image of the professional detective Bange in the novel is presented schematically. Using an expressive detail – the absence of a police uniform – F. Scheunemann emphasizes the exclusivity of this character, and also focuses on the key features of the latter – seriousness, thoughtfulness, the ability to correctly and quickly assess the situation. The image of this hero, on the one hand, is subordinated to the goal of enhancing the didactic pathos of the work, on the other hand, his assessment of the activities of Tom and his team allows the reader to understand the true significance of the images of amateur detectives in the artistic world of this work.

The Analysis of the Phonetic Interference on the Sample of “Spanglish”

Abstract

In the following article language interference as one of the forms of language contact is being investigated. The purpose of the study is to analyze the forms, in which language interference, precisely, its phonetical part can be expressed, and to draw conclusions on the basis of the analysis. The contact of nations inevitably leads to the contact of languages in different forms of interaction. These might include processes from simple mistakes while learning a new language to the emergence of a new language phenomena. The highest form of the language interference may lead to the creation of a so called mixed language that is based on the compilation of the constituting languages. The interference may be expressed on different levels of language hierarchy. In the present article these various types are listed with the phonetic interference being thoroughly explained and exemplified. The analysis of the phonetic level of one of the mixed languages called “Spanglish” is being provided to give examples for various manifestations of the phonetic interference. The given mixed language is the mixture of the English and the Spanish languages, which are interfering in all hierarchical levels. The characteristics of the phonetic interference in “Spanglish” has been described; the phonetic peculiarities have been analyzed and systematized. In the present study the method of linguistic description, comparative analysis, classification method, component analysis have been used.
